Diploma of Children's Services Entry
Students with a completed Diploma Diploma of Community Services (Children's Services), Diploma of Children's Services, Diploma of Children's Services (Centre Based Care) or equivalent qualification will receive one year of
academic credit that will be automatically awarded by QUT Admissions after the QTAC offer and prior to the start of classes.
If you have one the above diplomas and receive an offer, you will be able to undertake the diploma entry enrolment program that allows you to complete the Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood) in three years.
This degree prepares students to teach children aged zero to eight years in early childhood centres and in junior primary classes. The teaching profession and quality teacher training programs in particular have become a universal focus for the sustainability of our society. Teaching continues to be a valued and sought after profession in all countries. Recognition of Prior Learning
Applications for recognition of prior learning are assessed on an individual basis.
Griffith University awards credit for prior learning. Prior learning may relate to previous study undertaken at Griffith, another University, a training organisation or TAFE. Credit transfer and articulation16
Students can apply to gain credit for prior learning by lodging a credit transfer application form17. Deakin University, a leading provider of teacher education in Victoria, offers an innovative degree program in Early Childhood Education. As Australia is on the cusp of significant growth in the early childhood education sector, the Faculty of Arts and Education has developed a new teacher education program to address the potential shortage of four year trained early childhood teachers.
The Bachelor of Early Childhood Education (BECE) will cover the age range of birth to five years and is available to qualified early childhood staff and kindergarten teachers seeking to extend their studies and upgrade their qualifications to the 4 year degree level. The BECE allows participants to complete the required additional study in 2 years, building on their Diploma qualifications to gain a 4 year qualification. For 3 year trained kindergarten teachers it will only take one year of study.
Advanced standing is Deakin's way of recognising credit that you deserve for prior studies over and above the minimum entrance requirement for the course. Applicants with three years of approved early childhood education tertiary study (such as a three year Bachelor of Early Childhood degree) may apply for up to 1 year of advanced standing
This course is for people who want to work in early childhood settings and who already hold a Diploma of Community Services (Children's Services) or equivalent. All students entering the course will do so with advanced standing, which takes the place of the first year of the degree. Students with at least two years full-time satisfactory teaching experience in an early childhood setting may receive credit for up to an additional four units. Bachelor of Early Childhood Studies students gain a deeper understanding of child development, learning theories and early childhood pedagogy; build understanding of early childhood curriculum development; critically reflect on current issues in early childhood education, family studies, and research; gain an appreciation for the culturally diverse situations of early childhood settings; and develop a solid professional foundation as an early childhood educator.
Teaching today requires graduates with an awareness of social, cultural and developmental issues. This course includes child development, sociology, indigenous studies and research methods. Skills in interpersonal communication, leadership and special needs are developed in university-based workshops and in workplaces that cater to the needs of children in communities across our region and in urban centres. Curriculum studies in this course meet the requirements for teaching children in all Key Learning Areas from Kindergarten to Year 6 in primary schools.
The program equips students with the professional skills required to foster positive development and learning in children, whether they are in childcare services, preschools or in primary schools.
The Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood and Primary) is grounded in the belief that graduates should continue to develop as scholars and teachers, and be practitioners who reflect on their own practice, and who are strong advocates for children and their families.

Admission Requirements
Not applicable. Available only to continuing students
Students who have successfully completed a TAFE Diploma of Children's Services are eligible for 36 units of credit. Credit is also available for two courses in Child Development successfully completed through Open Universities Australia. This credit arrangement may be extended as other relevant courses become available. Credit applications must be made in writing on the appropriate form to the Program Director. Students with a TAFE Diploma in Children's Services who are currently working in the field at an advanced level may apply for additional credit upon entry to the program.
This degree prepares students for a career working with young children in a range of early childhood education settings, such as child care, kindergarten, pre-school, preparatory grade and early primary school. Graduates will have the skills to design and deliver effective teaching programs for children up to eight years of age.
Note: External study can only be undertaken if student is the holder of a Diploma or Advanced Diploma in Childrens Services (or its equivalent), or has completed a minimum of eight (8) units of Early Childhood on-campus study from USQ or another approved university.
The Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood) degree is designed to provide Early Childhood qualifications in the context of Christian values. This degree not only prepares students to enter the teaching profession in an early childhood centre, preschool or infant school, but also prepares students to be responsible and ethical leaders in an age where children need positive Christian role models.
Certain qualifications from a TAFE or Registered Training Organization (RTO) may be used to demonstrate capacity to succeed at tertiary level. These are often course specific, for example:
- Certificate IV in Foundation Studies For entry to Various undergraduate degrees
- Certificate IV in Business Studies For entry to Bachelor of Business
- are flexible, literate, independent and well-informed, equipped with transferable skills highly valued in the workforce;
- have achieved high levels of knowledge and understanding of the content, context and processes of learning and teaching within early childhood environments
- engage critically with the knowledge as a means of ongoing professional practice;
- have developed knowledge of, and skills in, curriculum particularly related to their areas of study with a focus on the years of early childhood;
- can reflect critically on different teaching theories and practices, on their own teaching, and on their lives, in order to strive for excellence and creativity in their teaching role;
- can use a wide range of literacies with confidence and competence;
- can apply educational theory, knowledge and understanding to make informed professional judgments in diverse educational situations;
- work collaboratively with colleagues, young children, their families and the wider community towards achieving high quality learning outcomes;
- establish a broad educational foundation for ongoing professional development and lifelong learning;
- achieve the knowledge and understanding that different disciplines provide and also work across disciplinary boundaries actively to create cross-curriculum links, and
- appreciate the need for continuing professional development in their field of expertise.
What you need to know about credit
You may be eligible for credit if you have undertaken study at a registered training organisation or tertiary institution, either in Australia or overseas, including TAFE/VET.
Study undertaken at overseas institutions will be recognised as long as the study is considered to be equivalent to the level of education in Australian registered training organisations or tertiary institutions.
Students transferring from one Flinders University degree to another
Students who have completed topics within a degree at Flinders and wish to transfer to another degree at Flinders may wish to apply for credit transfer. This is not an automatic process so you will need to lodge an application, however it is not necessary for you to provide an academic transcript or syllabus.
Students from other Australian universities
Credit may be granted for studies successfully completed at any accredited Australian higher education institution.
Students from TAFE/VET
In most cases you need to have completed a qualification at Certificate IV level or higher in order to be considered for credit transfer. Credit may be given to a maximum of 54 units (towards a 3-year degree) for holders of a completed TAFE diploma, associate diploma, advanced diploma, degree or equivalent.
If your qualification is related to the degree you wish to undertake at Flinders, you will receive credit based on a comparison of the subjects already completed to the topics that are required in your chosen degree.
If you are studying/have studied for a TAFE/VET qualification refer to the TAFE to Uni insert November 2009 (PDF 323KB) to see if your qualification is listed. Otherwise, we will assess your qualification individually.
If your qualification is not related to the degree you wish to undertake at Flinders you may be entitled to a minimum amount of credit.
The Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood) was developed in consultation with state and national accrediting bodies. The course is distinctive in terms of its child-centred philosophy and is supported by up-to-date evidence on best practice in the early years, including research being undertaken through the Centre for Children and Young People, which is co-located with the School of Education. The course includes extensive professional experience so that students gain practice working with children from birth to eight years.
Advanced Standing
Advanced standing is recognition which may be granted to you as an enrolled student for other study at an appropriate institution (normally completed within the last ten years) or experience at a professional level in an area relevant to the current course.
If you wish to apply for advanced standing towards your course, you should complete and return the Advanced Standing Application form [pdf: 568k].
It is important to apply for advanced standing as early as possible in your studies as the amount of advanced standing you are granted may affect units in which you need to enrol. To prevent delays in processing your graduation you are strongly advised to have submitted all requests for Advanced Standing before commencing your final study period.
The Bachelor of Education (Primary) is a four year pre-service teacher qualification designed for effective teacher preparation in the unique contemporary context. The program develops capacities required by teachers working in the information age, a time of rapid change where education is recognised as playing an increasingly important role in society. The program develops teachers across the year levels 1-7, spanning the Early and Middle Phases of Learning. In particular, the program focuses on the development of skills, understandings and attributes that enable graduates to demonstrate specialist abilities with respect to:
- Literacy and numeracy
- Diversity and differentiated learning
- Leadership and research
- Connected practicum
College to UQ If you have an Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) Diploma or Advanced Diploma you may be eligible for credit towards a UQ program.

Early Childhood Education focuses on the education of children from birth to eight years of age, with particular emphasis on children from the preschool or preparatory year to Year 3. Early Childhood Education is a highly specialised field and this course is the most effective way to enter an early childhood teaching career. It prepares graduates for working in education and care services, including teaching in schools and preschools. Students will need a Blue Card (a working with children check issued by the Commission for Children and Young People and Child Guardian) before commencing their professional placements.
JCU has flexible advanced standing arrangements with other universities and vocational education providers such as TAFE Queensland and private colleges. If you have completed a degree, diploma or university subjects, you may be entitled to advanced standing.

In 2009 the Bachelor of Education - The Early Years will replace the Bachelor of Early Childhood Education. The Bachelor of Education - The Early Years is an exciting new approach to professional preparation in the early childhood sector program and focuses upon developing early childhood teachers who can work with children across the age range 0-5 years in a variety of early childhood settings.
There is a strong emphasis on community, social equity and justice with the focus on all young people being given the opportunity to reach their true potential.
Course content covers: Child Development, Learning through Play, Cultural and Social Diversity, Early Intervention, Innovative Curriculum Design and Delivery.
The approach to course delivery emphasises students' autonomy and critical reflection in their learning. Students are involved in problem-solving, field and library research, which is conducted in teams, following input provided by lecturing staff. Teamwork is also used to promote students' interpersonal skills, identified as a requirement for early childhood practitioners. A framework that provides scaffolding which is systematically reduced over the four years of the course further aims to develop skills in self-directing team work.
Appropriate arrangements are made to cater for the needs of students not proceeding through the program at the normal rate, as defined in the schedule below.
Advanced Standing
Academic credit of 48 credit points may be awarded to students who have completed a Diploma in Social Science (Child Studies) or equivalent.
This program offers opportunities for Diploma qualified child care workers in the early childhood field to achieve full professional status as a degree qualified Early Childhood teacher (Kindergarten/ Preschool).
The program has been designed to build upon students' existing knowledge and focus on the development of the professional attributes of teaching including:
* Responsibility for curriculum development
* Strategies for engaging children and families in learning
* Advocacy for children and families
* Continued professional development through research and understanding research
publication
* Providing links into the broader social and education communities in which they are
located
Entry Requirements
Applicants must have completed a Diploma of Children's Services or an approved equivalent. As part of their application, applicants, whose qualification on which the application is based is older than eight years, will be invited to submit additional supplementary material related to professional experience as part of their application. An interview and writing task may be required prior to selection for the program.
Applicants who have successfully undertaken studies at other recognised universities or tertiary institutions may be eligible for credit towards an undergraduate degree at Macquarie. This credit is called credit for previous studies and is expressed in terms of Macquarie credit points. Applicants who have already completed some tertiary study must submit full official transcripts of such study. Those who have studied at an institution other than an Australian university or a former New South Wales college of advanced education may be required to submit details from calendars or handbooks of syllabuses and units studied. If an applicant’s previous studies are in this category, the applicant is advised to begin assembling this information as soon as possible. General credit for previous studies is granted at 100 level (first year) or 200 level (second year) only.All 300 level (third year) studies must be completed at Macquarie.
